Map to Creativity
One of the exercises in my book is a map of your hand, and in my project I mapped the history of my creativity. Where did it come from? What did my ancestors do with their hands? Who has held my hand and supported my creativity? That project is a collage, done with the outline of my hand. Last week I tried a different approach, an abstracted version of my journey to creativity, inspired by both the landscape I so love as seen from the air, and the imagery of Hundertwasser, and artist I adore. In this exercise I tried to add intention to the shapes I made, by imagining they stood for parts...

I made a map a few months ago in my journal. It is of my ideal city, a village really, by the sea. Southern California was my childhood home, and aside from the traffic I really miss it. This place, La Dolce Vita (The good life) is by the sea, and has piers with cabanas at the end, like this one in Bora Bora. Nothing, but nothing could make me happier. My village is here. Inspired by having a week to play in the YMCA crafts center, and by the new book Dreaming From the Journal Page by my gal pal Melanie Testa. In the book she takes journal pages and creates art based on them. I thought I...
Read MoreAncient Cities Stencils
This is a really bad photo of a wonderful new product by Artistcellar Stencils. They are 8.5 x 11, full page sizes, of four cities: Paris, Venice, Amsterdam and London. They are sturdy, and very detailed. Lisa, who is Artistcellar, asked me to play with them and of course I responded with the enthusiasm of any arty cartophile, heck yes! I just got them, and will be taking them on a retreat this weekend to see what wonders arise. After that, I will be posting a giveaway of the piece I come up with. Any of you that cannot wait to get these, buy them and send me your photo, I will post them...
Read MoreJournal Maps and a Giveaway
I use maps in my journals because I love the way they look, and the way it helps establish where I was when I was journaling that page. Here is a page from an Italian journal, with a bit of a map of Orvieto, a hill town where I taught last year, and will teach again in 2013. I am teaching class in Virginia Beach in a few weeks about journal mapping, we will do some astrological maps, table maps, memory maps and whatever else I drum up between now and then. Here is the link for that. Journal Mapping In Virginia Beach. Many writers are also map lovers, and use maps in their studies for...
Read MoreWebinar and a Call to Share
Last week I did a webinar called My Journey with Maps. It was the story of how I got to be so map crazy. Here is the link if you missed it. It was fun to do, and hundreds of you listened in, actually about 800 and counting! Through that presentation I was invited to publish an article on the maps I am doing now, the scenes from the sky. I can’t post any of them yet, but here is a view that inspired me. I know there are lots of you out there inspired by these views, and I would love to get some samples of your work, so please, comment and post a link to your own bird’s eye view...
